Week recap: PS3 40GB; Xbox 360 boost; Wii jackets

Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 increased in the latest Japan sales data. The PS3 ranked as the No. 4 best-selling video game hardware overall.

Sony this week said that it will introduce a new 40GB PS3 SKU to Europe on Oct. 10. The new SKU will retail for 399 euros and feature built-in Wi-Fi and HDMI.

Sony this week began offering new games, demos, and videos at the Playstation Store. New offerings include Go! Sports Ski, The Simpsons demo, and the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune behind-the-scenes video.

Sony this week announced the release of NBA 08 to the PS3, Playstation 2, and PSP. Each title offers various basketball experiences, from high-definition on PS3 to The Life v.3 on PS2 to Block Party mini-games on PSP.

Sony this week said that it sold more than 550,000 PSP units in the month of Sept. in Japan. The new slim model in addition to key game releases helped spur sales at retail.

Microsoft Corp. this week announced that Halo 3 has generated $300 million in first-week U.S. sales. In addition, more than 2.7 million users have logged in online sessions via Xbox Live.

Microsoft this week announced that Bungie Studios will become an independent company. Microsoft will retain an equity interest in the company and keep rights to the Halo franchise.

Media Create Co. this week reported that Halo 3 topped Japan software sales charts in the last week of Sept. The latest Halo installment was released in Japan on Sept. 27.

In addition, Halo 3 helped boost Xbox 360 hardware sales in Japan. The hardware was the No. 6 best-selling video game hardware for the week.

Amazon.com this week began offering pre-orders for a new Xbox 360 hardware SKU. The Xbox 360 Arcade System will include pre-bundled Xbox Live Arcade titles for $279.
