Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 Core System is sold out at Best Buy Co.'s online division, fueling speculation that the entry-level SKU will phased out shortly.
On Thurs., the Core SKU was unavailable for purchase and held a limited pick-up availability status Bestbuy.com. The lowest-priced Xbox 360 was introduced in Nov. 2006 at $299. In Aug., Microsoft price cut the SKU to $279. Amazon.com this week began offering pre-orders for a new Xbox 360 Arcade System. The new SKU will include pre-bundled Xbox Live Arcade titles for $279.99. Other SKUs, including the Xbox 360 Premium and the Elite system remain available for purchase in-store and online. In Sept., Microsoft introduced a Halo 3 Xbox 360 Special Edition SKU that includes a custom paint color and matching accessories for $399. Microsoft this week said that Halo 3 generated $300 million in revenue in first-week sales. It added that Xbox 360 hardware sales doubled due to blockbuster sales of the sequel. The Xbox 360 has sold 6.3 million units to date in the U.S.
