Pre-order and launch sales for Halo 3 on Tues. have driven Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 past competitors at retailer Amazon.com.
On Tues., the Xbox 360 Premium SKU ranked at No. 5 at Amazon's Computer & Video Games division, an increase from a rank of No. 7 the week prior. By comparison, Nintendo Co.'s Wii ranked at No. 7 and the 60GB PS3 ranked at No. 9 on Tues. morning. Additionally, all three Halo 3 retail SKUs dominate the top three best-selling products in the division. The $59 Standard Edition ranks at No. 1, followed by the Limited and Legendary Edition at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Halo 3 launched Tues. at midnight and more than 10,000 U.S. retailers. The title is expected to generate $150 million in sales within the first 24 hours of release. The previous title, Halo 3, generated $125 million in 24 hours in the U.S. The title will be released in Europe on Sept. 26 and in Japan in Sept. 27. The Xbox 360 has sold 6.3 million units to date in the U.S. and 11.6 million units worldwide.
