Nintendo Co. on Thurs. said strong sales of the Wii home video game system and Nintendo DS handheld have fueled growth of the company's Pokemon franchise at U.S. retail.
According to NPD Group Inc., Pokemon Diamond is the best-selling game title of the year on any system, while Pokemon Pearl ranks as the No. 3 best-seller. Both titles have sold more than three million units in the U.S. Additionally, Pokemon Battle Revolution ranks as the No. 5 best-selling title for Wii this year. "These hard numbers show that the Pokemon franchise and Nintendo's systems are striking a chord with players of all ages and drawing in huge numbers of new players year after year," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "But anecdotally we're also seeing that these new Pokemon games are appealing to older players, the same ones who played the original Pokemon games when they debuted in the United States almost 10 years ago." Wii and the Nintendo DS were the top selling video game hardware offerings in July in the U.S, with Wii sales at 425,000 units and the DS at 405,000 units during the month. Amazon.com this week began limiting Wii orders to online customers due to high demand. The motion-sensitive hardware has been sold out for nine consecutive months at most U.S. retail locations. Nintendo expects to ship 16.5 million Wii units worldwide by Mar. 2008.
