Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 increased 700 percent at Amazon.com following the company's decision to price reduce the current retail SKU to $499.
The PS3 currently ranks at No. 3 in the best-selling Computer & Video Games products at the retailer. Before the price cut it held a rank of No. 24 on the charts. In addition, the PS3 ranks as the third biggest sales gainer in the Video Games division in the past 24 hours. Sony on Mon. announced the $100 price drop to the 60GB SKU and said that it will debut a new 80GB option to the U.S. in Aug. The latter SKU will include a retail copy of the online racing title MotorStorm. Sony told Bloomberg Sun. that it expects sales of the $499 PS3 to double in the U.S. The console has sold 1.38 million units to date in the U.S., less than half of Nintendo Co.'s 2.84 million in sales for its popular Wii home video game system. Additonally, Sony will showcase new wares at this week's E3 Media & Business Summit to attract new buyers to the system, including a new social networking platform called Home. Sony expects to ship 11 million PS3 units worldwide this business year.
