Select titles for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 fell to under $40 in the latest promotions for the super computer console.
Best Buy this week began advertising Sega's Virtua Fighter 5 for $39.99, $20 below its MSRP. In addition, Activision's Tony Hawk's Project 8 was discounted to $39.99, $10 below its MSRP. The new discounts come amid slow sales for the PS3, which has sold 1.2 million units to date in the U.S. The latest Playstation holds sales behind Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 at 5.5 million units and Nintendo Co.'s Wii at 2.5 million units sold in the U.S. to date. Last week, Sony trimmed its U.S. game division workforce by three percent in the midst of lower-than-expected performance for the PS3. This month, Sony said it will release a $499 Blu-ray player to electronics stores. Analysts predict that the lower prouction costs for the blue laser diode for Blu-ray players may prompt a price cut for the PS3. Sony has shipped 5.5 million PS3 units worldwide to date. It expects to ship 11 million by fiscal Mar. 2008.
