Wii outsells PS3 7-to-1 at Japan retail

Nintendo Co.'s Wii outsold Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 by more than 7-to-1 in the latest retail sales figures from Japan.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 77,913 units between Apr. 16 and Apr. 22. By comparison, the PS3 sold, 11,000 units in the same period.

In addition, Wii software ranked in four positions in the top 50 game sales for the week, including the No. 1-seller Super Paper Mario at 144,192 units sold in its debut week.

Other titles in the top ten include the five-game sports collection Wii Sports and the variety game pack Wii Play.

Nintendo this week posted record fiscal year revenue and profit on strong sales for the Wii, which has sold 5.84 million units worldwide to date.

Additionally, Nintendo moved 29 million units of Wii software worldwide.

Sony's Playstation 3 ranked as the No. 3-selling home console in the U.S. for Mar., behind Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.
