Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 continue to decrease in Japan on strong competition from Nintendo Co.'s video game hardware and its other Playstation branded offerings.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 11,948 units between Apr. 9 and Apr. 15. The figure represents an 18 percent decrease from the week prior and the third consecutive week that the console incurred a sales decrease in the region.
The PS3 ranked one game title in the top 50 game sales in the same period, Konami's Professional Baseball Spirits 4 at No. 35.
Nintendo's DS and Wii held the No. 1 and No. 2 hardware sales positions, respectively. Sony's PSP handheld and Playstation 2 hardware also fared better landing the No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
Sony this month discontinued the 20GB PS3 SKU in the U.S. citing overwhelming demand for the 60GB version. It may option an 80GB version in the near future.
