Nintendo DS No. 1 in hardware sales in Japan
Nintendo Co.'s Nintendo DS handheld held the No. 1 hardware sales position in Japan to outsell rival next-generation consoles.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the DS sold 146,073 units between Feb. 29 and Mar. 4. By comparison, the company's Wii sold 65,700 units, Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 sold 18,700 units and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 sold 6,130 units in the same period.
Software sales for the DS nabbed six of the top ten sales for the week. Top performing titles included Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, Brain Training 2, and New Super Mario Bros.
Nintendo has sold 35 million DS units worldwide to become the best-selling handheld in current international markets. It's rival, the multi-functional PSP, has sold around 24 million units worldwide.
