Sony misses PS3 sales target by 50% in U.S.
Bloomberg on Thurs. reported that Sony will miss its U.S. shipment target for the Playstation 3 by 50% on slowed production.
Market research firm NPD estimates that Sony sold 197,000 PS3 units in the U.S. Prior to launch Sony said that it would ship 400,000 units to the U.S. for its Nov. 17 launch.
Sony forecasts sales of 1 million PS3 units in North America by year-end.
In Japan, the PS3 has sold 152,000 units to date. The hardware ranks No. 3 in sales, behind Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Nintendo DS handheld, Media Create Co. reported on Fri.
Sony in mid-Sept. cut its shipment allocation to the U.S. and Japan in half due to a delay in production for a key machine component.
The electronics giant may have to cut short its lowered estimtate if it is unable to deliver more units in the final weeks of the calender year.
By comparison, Nintendo has sold 600,000 units of Wii in the U.S. Retailers including Target and Toys R Us held stock for early bird customers on Sun.
Next-gen incumbent Microsoft this week said that it will ship in excess of 10 million Xbox 360 units worldwide by year-end.
