Week recap: Nintendo Wii at $249; PS3 surge; Xbox 360 USB hub

Nintendo this week announced that Wii will drop to U.S. retail on Nov. 19 for $249.99. The system will include one wireless Wii Remote, one Nunchuk controller, and a copy of Wii Sports.

In addition, Nintendo this week announced that Wii will drop to Japan on Dec. 2 and in Europe on Dec. 8.

The video game system will employ the Wii Channel Menu, a variety of entertainment, information, and communication channels.

Finally, additional controllers for Wii including the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk will retail for $40 and $20, respectively.

This week online media outlets flubbed Nintendo's meeting time for the official Wii unveil in Japan. Numerous website posted an incorrect time leaving readers to wait several more hours before reading official launch details.

The Nintendo DS took the hardware charts in Japan this week to outsell competitors like the PSP, PS2, and Xbox 360.

Nintendo announced in Japan that the Nintendo DS will rock a new headset for online games. The headset is available now and will support the release of new Pokemon titles.

The DigiTimes reported this week that Microsoft may offer an Xbox 360 with built-in HD DVD drive. The company will offer and external HD DVD drive this holiday.

Nyko this week released a USB hub for the Xbox 360. The hub will allow owners to connect up to three USB devices to the 360.

Sony told Next-Generation this week that it will follow up the initial PS3 launch of 400,000 units with an additional 800,000 units before the end of the year.

Sony has released short films to pimp the PS3. The films employ the slogan, "This is living" to promote the system as a living, multi-functional entertainment device.

Finally, interest for the PS3 and Wii surged this week at Amazon Japan. The 60GB PS3 SKU came out a nose ahead of Wii in the latest customer registration data.
