Nintendo DS hardware is the top-selling handheld in the U.S. on sales figures released Thursday.

The DS and new DS Lite sold just under 600,000 units combined in June, Nintendo said Thursday.

The strong sales of the latest Nintendo handheld helped game sales jump 25% overall in June to $844.5M. In addition hardware sales increased to $297.8M from $200.7 the year prior according to market research firm NPD Group.

The sales figure is similar to the demand seen for the handheld in Japan, where the DS Lite averages around 150K sold per week.

The DS has seen interest from casual game players who can choose from games like Brain Age, Tetris DS, and Sudoku Gridmaster. In addition, the handheld appeals to game veterans that enjoy franchise titles like New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. was the No. 1 selling game in June for the second month in a row at 450,000 units sold. Brain Age and Big Brain Academy sold a combined 350,000, while Nintendogs barked another 100,000 units in the same period.

The Nintendo DS handheld competes against Sony's PSP handheld entertainment system, which can play games, movies, music, and video on flash memory cards and UMD.
