Week recap: Nintendo Wii; PS3 $817M loss; Xbox 360 targets up

This week, Nintendo announced the final name for the Revolution console, Wii. Nintendo explains that the distinctive "ii" spelling symbolizes both unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.
However, fans may be ready to revolt. The name reveal has seen a knee-jerk reaction of hatred on the Internet. Sega this week announced that it will toss Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz to Wii. The new installment will utilize the Wii's unique controller. In addition, THQ will produce titles based on Nickelodeon properties for the Wii. Atari also announced that Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is in development for the Wii. Sony predicts an $817M loss in the current fiscal year on start-up costs for the Playstation 3 console. The next Playstation will include expensive components like the Cell processor and Blu-ray disc drive. Meanwhile, Microsoft said this week it will boost sales targets for the Xbox 360 from 4.5 – 5.5M to 5 – 5.5M on increased production of the console. Sega will drop Virtua Tennis 3 and Sega Rally Revo to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Both titles will include improved AI and high-definition graphics. The Nintendo DS continues to lead hardware and software sales in Japan. The DS Lite is the preferred handheld version of the hardware, while Brain Training games continue to hold steady on the charts. Buena Vista Interactive this week said that it will publish new versions of the puzzle game Lumines to the PSP and PS2. The PSP will see a sequel while the PS2 will see a new version of the original. BVG will also publish Meteos: Disney Edition for the Nintendo DS. Finally, EA will pay $14.9M to settle an overtime lawsuit among programmers who cried unpaid overtime. The publisher will settle claims of over 600 programmers who worked from Feb. 2001 to Feb. 2006.
