Nintendo Wii; Revolution receives final name
Published: April 27, 2006 9:38 AM PDT
Nintendo on Thursday revealed the final name of the console code-named Revolution, Wii. Produced "we", the name will be the name used to market the innovative new console worldwide.
Wii, Nintendo explains, means that the console is for everyone and can be easily remembered around the world no matter what language they speak. In addition, the distinctive "ii" spelling symbolizes both unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. The name change comes after a two-year use of the Revolution code name. At one point the Revolution had a logo that appeared in the console's first public debut. However, in the most recent trade appearance the Revolution name was absent from the console front. The Nintendo Wii will be backward compatible with current GameCube games and have downloadable access to titles from previous Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Turbo-Grafx 16 consoles. Several third-party developers like Ubisoft, THQ, and Sega have revealed their first titles for the new system that will take advantage of the new remote controller. Nintendo Wii will make its official debut at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles next month.
