Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on Tuesday said it will drop the first Blu-ray disc format movies to retail on May 23.

The first Blu-ray disc titles include 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, A Knight's Tale, The Last Waltz, Resident Evil Apocalypse and XXX.

A second wave of titles will follow on June 13.

The new release Underworld Evolution will debut day and date in early summer on DVD and Blu-ray.

"We are primed to ensure that a variety of Blu-ray Disc content is available at retail to support the introduction of the first BD players from Samsung Electronics and Pioneer, as well as the first BD player and compatible VAIO computer from Sony," said Mr. Feingold.

"Sony Pictures further intends to provide additional titles to coincide with the launch of BD products from other manufacturers. We're thrilled that the Blu-ray Disc era is about to begin."

The titles will coincide with the first commercially available Blu-ray disc player from Samsung, to be followed by players from Pioneer, Sony, and a Blu-ray VAIO PC.

"As a charter member of the Blu-Ray Disc Association, Samsung Electronics is proud to introduce the first commercially available Blu-ray Disc player, BD-P1000, to Best Buy, Circuit City and electronic specialty store consumers on May 23," said Jim Sanduski, senior vice president of marketing for Samsung Electronics America.

"We're extremely pleased to join Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in providing an outstanding high definition experience that features the next generation optical disc format."

Sony may see slower market penetration that the rival HD-DVD format from Toshiba. Toshiba will debut its first HD-DVD player in March for $499 along with the first HD-DVD movie titles.

In addition Sony is likely to delay the Playstation 3 console, a video game console that is seen as a mass market Blu-ray player that will drive the format into living rooms.
