Amazon.com has opened an HD DVD store to allow its customers to purchase the next-generation DVD player and new releases for the new format.
Toshiba hopes that the low cost will help its barrier of entry to living rooms. Its HD-A1 player will retail for $499. Titles available for pre-order notification include films from Paramount Studios, Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures. Toshiba's HD DVD format is at war against Sony's Blu-ray Disc format. Both will debut this year and both will be available on rival consoles. Microsoft said that it will offer an external HD DVD format drive for its Xbox 360 user base. Sony will include Blu-ray Disc in its next console, Playstation 3. Of the two, Blu-ray sees majority support from film studios, while computer giants like Microsoft and HP will back HD DVD. Retailers expect a split market the first several years of both formats in the retail channel. Sony hopes that its PS3 console will prompt mass market adoption of the Blu-ray format.
