Microsoft denied claims that it will release a Blu-ray Disc peripheral for its Xbox 360 console should HD DVD bust in the high-definition format wars.

"Current reports indicating that we have a back-up plan, which includes Blu-Ray support are incorrect. At this point, we’re fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats," the company said in an official statement to The Mercury News.

Recent reports suggested that a Blu-ray Disc drive could be in the works after Xbox corporate VP of worldwide marketing told ITMedia that one could appear for the system.

The software giant announced at CES 2006 that the Xbox 360 will see an external HD DVD drive this year.

However, Sony's Blu-ray Disc format will see larger support from consumer electronics manufacturers and motion picture studios.

Blu-ray Disc is also a key component in the company's next Playstation 3 console.

Microsoft's current Xbox 360 supports standard single and dual-layer DVD media.

Market research data firm NPD Group said Jan. 13 that Microsoft has sold 600,000 Xbox 360 units, a figure that is below analysts, publisher, and sales forecast expectations.
