Sony, IBM, and Toshiba said Thursday that the three partners will renew its five-year partnership that produced the Cell processor.

The Cell processor is a multi-purpose chip to be used in multiple devices and is a key component in Sony's Playstation 3 console.

Potential uses for the Cell processor include TV sets, cell phones, servers, and PCs.

The extended partnership will focus on research for next-generation chip technology at 32 nanometers and smaller.
