Nintendo DS is this generation's current handheld market leader according to internal sales data at Nintendo.

Nintendo DS retail sales are at six million units in the U.S. and Japan compared to Sony's PSP at 4.26 million.

Nintendo recently spoke to media outlets at the UBS Global Media Conference to discuss company strategy for the console and handheld market.

The pup simulator Nintendogs has sold 950,000 units in the U.S. and carries twice the female purchase rate than traditional software.

Nintendo currently owns 72% of the handheld market, with Game Boy Advance at 41%, Nintendo DS at 31%, and PSP at 28%.

Nintendo DS sales began to surge in Japan months ago on sales of untraditional games like Nintendogs and Brain Training for Adults. The hardware continues to outsell all other consoles in that region.

Nintendo dropped its new online game service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, in conjunction with online games Mario Kart DS and Activision's Tony Hawk's American Sk8land on Nov. 15. Players can log on via a wireless home network, at hotspot locations, and at any local McDonald's restaurant.

In three weeks, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection has logged almost three million connections worldwide and nearly 200,000 unique visitors on Mario Kart DS.

The PSP sells at a more even pace in the U.S. Sony began selling a limited edition Giga Pack at $299 in Nov. The electronics giant aims to double the PSP's install base by the end of the holidays.
