Tor Books has reached a licensing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios to publish a series of three novels based on the property, Perfect Dark.
Microsoft acquired the Perfect Dark property after purchasing Rare Ltd. from Nintendo in 2002.
The novel, Perfect Dark: Initial Vector, will be the first of three novels released in trade paperback. The books will attempt to explain lead character Johanna Dark's mysterious background.
The novel will be authored by Greg Rucka and be released on October 4th.
"Tor’s mission is to provide great books that explore human innovation and our ability to push the limits of technology. Perfect Dark Zero is on the cutting edge of high fidelity interactive games and we think our relationship with Microsoft Game Studios is a perfect match," says Tom Doherty, President and Publisher of Tor Books.
Microsoft will relaunch the Perfect Dark brand with the game Perfect Dark Zero. Scheduled to drop at the Xbox 360 launch, the game will include a brand new first-person story mode and online multiplayer through Xbox Live.
Perfect Dark Zero debuted with luke warm reception from viewers during MTV's Xbox 360 reveal special. The game subsequently was not demonstrated on the show floor at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
Perfect Dark is not the first property to receive a novel treatment. The game novel, Halo: The Fall of Reach, was published in 2001 based on the blockbuster Halo franchise.
