SanDisk, the flash memory manufacturer, has shipped high-capacity Memory Stick Pro Duo cards to European retailers in anticipation of the September 1st PSP launch.
The Memory Stick Pro Duo cards are made in capacities of 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB to let PSP owners stores data, music, movies, and photos.
"Our cards will be available at major retailers in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, the Nordic countries and Eastern Europe," said Ed Moro, SanDisk's managing director of sales for Europe. Outlets will include game specialty, toy and consumer electronics stores, and shipments will be made this month and in September, he said.
The PSPs shipped to Europe will include the 2.0 firmware upgrade that adds a web browser, digital photo transfer between PSPs, and added support for image and music audio formats.
SanDisk is prepared to pimp flash memory to the next-generation consoles from Sony and Nintendo. The company will provide Secure Digital (SD) Gaming cards from 256MB to 1GB for the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Revolution.
"The videogame industry has begun to utilize removable flash memory, a trend that looks to continue with the proliferation of the PSP and 2006 launches of the PS3 and Revolution," said Schelley Olhava, program manager for IDC, a market research firm. "With the addition of multimedia functions and a wealth of new online content that can be downloaded and stored, we expect that consumer demand for more memory will increase."
Demand for Memory Stick Pro Duos peaked in North America during the PSP launch in March 2005. Retailers were frequently sold out of all capacities of Pro Duo media, including the 1GB card, the highest-capacity Pro Duo card at the time.
