Japanese sales provider Dengenki online has compiled the accumulated sales of the Nintendo DS and the PSP, with Nintendo outselling PSP hardware by nearly 1 million units in Japan.
Dengenki said that the Nintendo has sold 2,357,000 DS units to date, while Sony has sold 1,400,000 PSP units.
In addition, the Nintendo DS has sold 4,191,000 units of software, compared to 2,512,000 units of PSP software.
The hardware to software ratio is the same for both units, at 1.8 pieces each.
The Nintendo DS's success can be attributed to the hot-selling Nintendogs, and new titles like DS Brain Training for Adults. While several DS titles have ranked in the top ten in previous weeks, the lack of PSP games have kept hardware and software sales below Nintendo's handheld.
Nintendo debuted the DS in Japan last December, followed a week later by the PSP. Sony's PSP initially faced a harsh shortage over the holiday season, with only 200,000 units at retail. The PSP also outsold the DS in initial weeks.
However, the DS's consistent stream of hits, including Touch! Kirby, Nintendogs, and DS Brain Training for Adults has accelerated the system past Sony's handheld entertainment system.
As of fiscal March, Nintendo has sold 5.27 million DS units worldwide, while Sony has sold 2.97 million units in the same period.
