Sony's Universal Media Disc format for the PSP has been approved by Ecma International as a industry standard format. Sony created the proprietary medium for the company's handheld entertainment system.

Ecma is an industry association founded in 1961 that is dedicated to the standardization of information and communication systems.

The UMD disc can hold 1.8 gigabytes of data for music, movies, and games.

Movie studios like Buena Vista, Universal and Fox have pledged support for the medium and are scheduled to release old and new feature films on UMD format.

UMD movie sales have been brisk at retail. Sony recently said that movies have sold over 100,000 units in accumulated sales since the PSP debuted in December.

The format has been seen by content providers as a way to target the 18-34 demographic, or buyers of Sony's PSP. As a result porn publisher Glay'z will begin selling adult material on UMD format this July in Japan.

A Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson has said that the company views the releases as 'undesirable'.

Sony has sold 2.97 million PSP units by the end of fiscal March. The company will release the PSP in Europe this September.
