In a New York Times online article, the publication said that Sony Online Entertainment has purchased the rights to Warner Bros.' massive online PC game, The Matrix Online.

Based on the feature film, The Matrix Online is a massive online multiplayer game that never took off in popularity. At 50,000 subscribers the game is a disappointment that Warner Bros. eventually had to write off.

Sony Online Entertainment is the developer of one of the most successful massive online games, Everquest.

In addition to the purchase of The Matrix Online, Warner Bros.' will license characters from its DC Comics division to be used in future online games.

Warner Bros. is expected to share in future profits with Sony to recoup development costs and losses.
