Nintendo Co. Ltd. this week demonstrated Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, CA.
The demonstration build included the Sand Kingdom in which Mario could utilize his new hat Cappy to capture gameplay to take the form of an enemy.
In one section, users could use Cappy to take the form of Bullet Bill to fly across platforms and to trigger to jump platform.
In another section, Mario could take the form of an AI character to wear sunglasses that could reveal hidden paths.
Finally, a section in which Mario must wall travel transformed him into a classic NES Mario to traverse against the 2D wall with classic question mark boxes.
Controls were solid and the new Cappy capture mechanic became second-nature to traditional Mario gameplay.
The graphics engine was vibrant at 60 frames-per-second. Special effects like billowing sand and smoke plumes were impressive, as is the draw distance in each level.
Super Mario Odyssey is an action platform title in which Mario embarks on a new worldwide adventure to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s wedding plans
Locations include New Donk City, Sand Kingdom, and Wooded Kingdom.
It will be sold Oct. 27.
