Nintendo Co. Ltd. will end production of the Wii U console this year in a report by Nikkei Asian Review.
The report claims the some system components have already been discontinued.
Nintendo this week refuted the report and told publication IT Media that Wii U production is scheduled to continue.
Nintendo this year is expected to announce the successor to the Wii U, code-named NX.
The Wii U has sold 12.6 million units worldwide. Top-selling titles include Super Mario Maker and Splatoon.
The console was released in 2012 and was noted for new dual-screen gameplay with the Wii U GamePad, which features a 6.2-inch LCD screen as a second display.
New Wii U games in 2016 include Pokken Tournament and Star Fox Zero.
