NIS America Inc.’s Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a solid spin-off that includes decent shoot and slash gameplay and trademark sass dialogue in a world overrun by evil robot bears.
In Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls features Komaru Naegi, a girl trapped in a room that subsequently escapes into a world taken over by evil bear Monokuma robots. She meets Toko Fukawa, a girl who shares a split personality with a serial killer, and partners with her to survive.
The title features third-person action between Komaru and Toko. Komaru is armed with a Hacking Gun that can be used to shoot Truth Bullets that each hold distinct functions. Toko can’t take damage and is armed with scissors to hack and slash enemies. In addition, she can transform into alter ego Genocide Jack to perform special attacks. Both characters can be upgraded with special skills.
Enemies include various Monokuma robots that can require different Truth Bullets to defeat. Bullets include Break to damage robots, Dance to make robots dance for a limited time, and Move to activate electronics and machines.
Control and aim functionality is solid between both characters and offer variety to action sequences. The camera can be a bit too close in tight corridors but functions well in most cases.
The title features a lot of exposition and is as story-based as prior Danganronpa entries with plenty of nods to the franchise, including returning characters, themes, and musical nods.
Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a solid spin-off that takes the series into an action-oriented direction without compromising the humor or themes from prior text-based entries. While the action portions could be lengthened, the unique story, tone, and brash dialogue is a welcome extension to the series.
