Atlus USA Inc.’s Abyss Odyssey: Extended Dream Edition for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 4 is a decent action adventure RPG that includes expansive combat options and challenging enemy difficulty in local or online two-player co-op.
Characters Katrien, Ghost Monk, and Pincoya each feature a range of unique combat weapons and skills for attack, magic, defense, and dodge to offer variety and dexterity to each fight. In addition, each character can earn skill points to upgrade attacks and magic.
The maze-like levels require users to traverse and attack a wide range of monsters, from walking demons, flying ghosts, to large beasts. Enemy attack and defense patterns are varied and challenging to require users to utilize their arsenal well with time-based precision.
In online co-op, a player can join at any time and progress is saved to both accounts. The Extended Dream Edition includes a solid new four-player versus mode and Nightmare Mode for peak difficulty.
The graphics engine is solid at 60 frames-per-second. Characters and enemies hold a dark, artistic edge against detailed backdrops. The sound engine is decent with moody orchestral scores.
Abyss Odyssey: Extended Dream Edition is well-equipped for decent hack and slash RPG action in both single-player and co-op. The action can wane after some time in the dungeon, but the Abyss has enough challenge and variety to lure combat-ready fighters.
