Microsoft Corp. this week said the Halo franchise has sold 65 million units at global retail.
Developed by Bungie Inc. for the Xbox, the title helped launch the first video game console from Microsoft in 2001.
The franchise has since been released to the PC and mobile devices.
The latest installment, Halo 5: Guardians, is in development at 343 Industries.
Halo 5: Guardians, to be sold Oct. 27, is the next installment of the franchise to include Master Chief.
It is said to be larger than Halo 4, run at a 60 frames-per-second graphics fidelity, and feature dedicated servers.
In addition, the entry will introduce Warzone, a brand new multiplayer mode that will combine player vs. player and player vs. AI into one 24-player match.
