Microsoft Corp. this week said it will deploy Xbox 360 backwards compatibility functionality to the Xbox One this holiday.

The function will allow Xbox One owners to utilize their Xbox 360 retail discs to download the software to their Xbox One and play natively with new Xbox One functionality.

Microsoft sold 1.6 million Xbox One and Xbox 360 hardware consoles combined in the first quarter.

Xbox platform shipments decreased 20 percent in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the year prior.
