Nintendo Co. this month said sales for the Nintendo 3DS handheld increased in 2015 compared to the year prior.

The company said Nintendo 3DS sales increased nearly 80 percent over sales in the first three months of 2014.

It cited the release of the New Nintendo 3DS XL as a factor for increased sales.

In the third quarter, Nintendo held an operating income of $270 million on revenue of $2.3 billion.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 4.99 million units in the third quarter, down from 7.76 million units the year prior.

The handheld has shipped 50 million units to date in global territories.
