Nintendo Co. this week said previewed the 8-player Smash Mode in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U to Punch Jump in a pre-release preview.

The 8-player Smash Mode allows eight players to fight simultaneously in local multiplayer in larger stages.

In the preview, five players were paired with two amiibo characters in the Big Battlefield stage.

Super Smash Bros. Smash ModeThe stage was large enough to hold all the frenetic action. In addition, the graphics engine held at 60 frames-per-second at 1080p resolution without any slowdown.

Controls were tight with the Super Smash Bros. GameCube Controller. The controller held the same solid build as the original GameCube controller and included rumble functionality with the GameCube Controller Adapter, which plugs into both USB ports on the Wii U.

The custom stage creation tool was easy to use via the Wii U GamePad. Users can draw any terrain shape, add items with the stylus, and immediately test the stage against a CPU.

Super Smash Bros. will include brand new features including Smash Tour: World Smash, a board game mode; Special Smash Mode to fight with special parameters; Coin Battles to compete to collect coins; Stamina Matches to fight until hit points reach zero; Classic Mode to allow one or two players to fight through a series of battles; All-Star Mode to fight opponents in chronological, and Event Mode for one or two players to take on set character and theme-based battles.

Both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS SKU include online multiplayer functionality to battle users on their respective platforms.

Each SKU includes a distinct set of battle arenas.

Finally, Ridley will appear in the Metroid series-inspired Pyrosphere stage.

The Super Smash Bros. Bundle will include the game, Nintendo GameCube Super Smash Bros. Edition Controller, and Nintendo GameCube Adapter for Wii U at $99.99.
