Microsoft Corp. this week said it will release a new Media Player application to the Xbox One in a new System Update.

The Media Player will allow users to play media files from an attached USB device or network-connected media server with DLNA protocols. In addition, the player will support new file types including mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and mkv.

Between Apr. to June, Microsoft shipped 1.1 million units of Xbox hardware. Xbox revenue increased 14 percent to $104 million from the year prior.

Microsoft this month said Xbox One sales doubled in month-to-month figures from May to June.

The Xbox One standard edition without Kinect, is sold at $399.00.

The hardware was previously sold only with the Kinect sensor at $499.99.

The Xbox One has sold 1.2 million units in the fiscal third quarter ending Mar. 31, 2014.

It has sold five million units to retailers in global markets.

The Xbox One features an 8-core AMD CPU, Radeon GPU, 8GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, Blu-ray disc drive, 802.11n Wireless with Wi-Fi Direct, HDMI, and USB 3.0.
