Sega Corp. this week previewed Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Nintendo Co.’s Wii U at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
Developed by Big Button Entertainment, the new action-adventure title introduces new exploration and combat to the franchise with trademark characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy.
The preview stage included an exploration desert level that was large and filled with multiple enemies to battle. Users can press the X button to attack, A to jump and B to utilize a new EnerBeam tether mechanic.
Attack combinations are fluid to allow for easy enemy beat downs. Subsequent enemies carry shields and users must utilize the EnerBeam to lasso the shield away from the enemy prior to an attack execution.
Puzzle elements require players to explore tiered objects. In the level, users had to power gate switches and charge attack carts to move to the next area.
A boss fight that included Dr. Robotnik required users to deploy the EnerBeam to launch missiles back at a large mechanic contraption.
The final game will include speed-based levels signature to the franchise.
The graphics engine was solid at 30 frames-per-second. Sonic and pals are drawn in a new art style that makes each more distinct and to accurately reflect their unique power set.
Sonic Boom will be sold in Nov. 2014.
