NIS America Inc.’s Demon Gaze for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita is a solid dungeon crawler that offers a traditional quest experience with a demonic twist and hefty customization options.
In Demon Gaze, the user (Oz) awakens to learn that he possesses the power to take demon souls with the gaze of a unique eye. With each dungeon crawl, users capture more demons that can be used to assist in battle.
Prior to each crawl, players can rest and ready for battle at the Inn. At the inn, users can view quests, recruit new party members, customize them, and purchase new equipment. Each night’s stay requires rent payment which can be acquired through battle.
Party customization is in-depth with more than 40 character portraits, five races, and eight character classes including Fighter, Paladin, Samurai, Ranger, Assassin, Wizard, and Healer.
Each dungeon is modeled in 3D and users move step by step in order to possess a number of dungeon circles. Through battle, users will acquire gems that can be placed on the circle to summon demons. Once the demons are defeated and all circles are acquired the quest is completed.
In battle, the player can Attack, Defend, use an item, or call out a demon to aid in battle. Demons can attack enemies, cast spells against them, or aid users with heal spells, but must be called back in before the Demon Gauge depletes. Battles are well-designed and efficient, though enemy difficulty can ramp up quickly for those unprepared for new areas.
The graphics engine is decent at 30 frames-per-second. The dungeon modeling is basic but high-definition character portraits and solid voice work help to sustain a bright and upbeat world.
Demon Gaze is a solid dungeon crawler with maze-like dungeons, efficient fights, and heavy customization options to keep any avid adventurer busy in battle.
