Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii U hardware surged in Japan in the latest sales data for the region.

Media Create Co. this month reported that the Wii U sold 74,903 units between Dec. 9 and Dec. 15 to rank at No. 2 in overall sales.

It sold 48,762 units the week prior.

Super Mario 3D World ranked third in software sales selling 57,862 units for the week. The title has sold 241,107 copies since launch.

The company Oct. 31 released the 32GB Deluxe Set Bundle with New Super Mario Bros. U, Wii Party U, Wii Karaoke Download Code, and Wii Remote Plus at 32,800 yen ($331) and the 32GB Deluxe Set Bundle New Super Mario Bros. U, Wii Fit U, Wii Karaoke Download Code, and Wii Remote Plus at 34,800 yen ($351).

The Wii sold 588 units in the same period.

Nintendo sold 460,000 Wii U units between Mar. and Sept. 2013. It has sold 3.91 million units worldwide to date.

Wii U software sales totaled 19.71 million to date.

The company maintains a forecast of nine million Wii U hardware units sold by fiscal Mar. 2014.

Nintendo in Nov. began sale of the Wii U Deluxe Set with New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U at $299.99.
