Nintendo Co. this week released a new system update that adds Miiverse and Nintendo Network ID functionality to the Nintendo 3DS handheld.

Miiverse functionality allows users to post and browse game message boards. The application includes an offline mode that will queue up to three posts until a Wi-Fi connection is established.

The Nintendo Network ID will allow users to link their current Wii U Nintendo eShop account to combine balances and Wish Lists. In addition, the connection will allow users to transfer their Nintendo 3DS content to a different Nintendo 3DS an unlimited number of times.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 3.89 million units in the first quarter. It has sold 34.98 million units worldwide to date. Nintendo 3DS software sales totaled 122.42 million units to date.

Nintendo in Nov. began sale of the Nintendo 3DS XL Gold and Black with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Bundle.
