NIS America Inc.’s Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 is a solid strategy entry with a complete range of franchise options and trademark humor.
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness includes the trio from the first entry, Laharl, Etna, and Flonne. Laharl is now the main Overlord of the Netherworld but sets out with Etna and Flonne to prove he is a worthy, respectable successor.
The battle system is in great form with a straight-forward and efficient blueprint. The title includes the same grid-based battle map found in prior entries. Users must deploy each character on the map, plot actions to execute, then end their turn.
In addition, users can deploy a multitude of group attacks when characters are placed in proximity. The toss function is back where users can stack characters on each other and toss them closer to the enemy. Characters can even be tossed on top of an enemy in order in inflict increased damage. Finally, boxes and other map objects add another layer depth with the option to move items and utilize them to gain advantage over enemy placement.
Returning to the series is the Master/Pupil System to designate a Master and Pupil to earn skills and stat boots, and Geo Panels to alter status in certain blocks. Characters can be further customized via class with unique abilities, skills, and weapon types.
In-between chapters, users can heal characters, purchase new weaponry and items – each with statistical attributes and humorous descriptions, and enter a new Item World to battle and power up weapons, items and characters.
The graphics engine is clean at 60 frames-per-second. Disgaea characters look sharp in HD with well-animated sprites and spunky voice work.
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness is a solid entry in the strategy RPG franchise. The title’s battle foundation is enhanced with series-favorite options and brand new elements to keep the battles and banter alive and well in the Netherworld.
