Sony Corp. this week said it will release an update to the Playstation 3 firmware update 4.45 that will address a problem incurred on select consoles.

The company this month said it will release a system software update June 27 in a response to claims that firmware update 4.45 can cause the XMB interface to not display properly.

Firmware update 4.45 was released last week and consumers subsequently held claims of ‘bricked’ consoles post install of the update.

Sony in Feb. said the game division held an operating profit of $49.3 million, down 86 percent from the year prior.

It sold 6.8 Playstation 3 and Playstation 2 consoles in the quarter, down from 7.4 million one year ago. It forecasts 16 million hardware units sold in the fiscal year ending Mar.

Console software sales declined to 61.7 million from 68.7 million one year prior.

Sony will release the Playstation 4 this holiday.
