Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked third in Japan in the latest retail figures for the region.

Media Create Co. this month reported the PS3 sold 16,807 units between Apr. 1 and Apr. 7 to rank No. 3 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 19,069 units to rank at No. 4 the week prior.

The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, including One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 at No. 3 and Pro Baseball Spirits 2013 at No. 4.

Sony this week said it intentionally introduced the Playstation 4 with a platform title Knack to defuse the notion that the next-generation hardware would only cater to shooters and other realistic titles.

Shuhei Yoshida, President Worldwide Studios at Sony told EDGE Magazine this month that the tactic was meant to showcase the PS4 as a broad category machine.

Sony this week said MLB 13 The Show led game sales for the Playstation Network division in Mar. 2013 U.S. data.

MLB 13 The Show ranked as the No. 1 PSN and PS3 Full Games in Mar. The top five titles included Journey at No. 2, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct at No. 3, Terraria at No. 4 and Tomb Raider at No. 5.

Sony this week announced the Playstation Network Spring Fever 2013 initiative to offer one new download title from an independent developer each week in the month of Apr.

New titles include Guacamelee! Apr. 9 ($14.99 / $11.99 PS Plus), Dragon Fantasy Book I Apr. ($9.99 / $7.99 PS Plus), Thomas Was Alone Apr. 23 ($9.99 / $7.99 PS Plus), and Zombie Tycoon 2 Apr. 30 ($9.99 / Free PS Plus).

Sony this week price cut the Playstation 3 500GB God of War: Ascension Legacy Bundle by $50 in a new retail initiative.

The PS3 500GB God of War: Ascension Legacy Bundle now sells at $299.99, $50 off the prior $349.99 MSRP.

The bundle includes the 500GB Garnet Red PS3 hardware, God of War: Ascension, God of War Saga, and 30-day Playstation Plus trial membership at $349.99.

Capcom Co.’s Capcom Arcade Cabinet Pack – 1985 Pack #2 is a varied compilation of three classic coin-up titles that include extra modes and modern options to update the arcade experience in a FINAL Review.

The Playstation Vita held the No. 2 hardware rank in Japan in the latest retail data from the region.

Media Create Co. this month said the PS Vita sold 19,328 units between Apr. 1 and Apr. 7 to rank as the No. 1 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the hardware sold 31,795 the week prior.

The PS Vita ranked one title in the top 10 for the week, Muramasa Rebirth at No. 8.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 8,876 units to rank at No. 4 in the same period.

Sony this week released System Software Update v2.10 for the Playstation Vita handheld.

The update offers new functionality, including the option to create folders, save home screen layout, added browser video support, email enhancements, option for Playstation Plus members to update Playstation Mobile format software and upload game save data via 3G connection, and new ‘Mute Automatically’ option.

Sony this week said Atelier Totori Plus ranked as the top-selling Playstation Vita title at the Playstation Network in Jan. 2013.

Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland with Bonus DLC ranked No. 1 in sales for the month, followed by Nun Attack at No. 2, Urban Trial Freestyle at No. 3, Sine Mora at No. 4, and Persona 4 Golden at No. 5.

Top PSP titles for the month include Monster Hunter Freedom Unite at No. 1, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable at No. 2, and Star Wars Battelfront II at No. 3.

Sony Corp. this week said it will realease Tearaway for the Playstation Vita Oct. 22.

Developed by Media Molecule, Tearaway is an new platform title that features the character Iota in a dynamic paper-based world that can be controlled in various ways.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware neared 500 units in new sales data from Japan.

Media Create Co. this month reported that the Xbox 360 sold 536 units between Apr. 1 and Apr. 7 to rank No. 7 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 598 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 for the week.

Bethesda Softworks this week said it will release The Knife of Dunwall DLC to Dishonored next week.

The Knife of Dunwall DLC features Daud, the assassin responsible for Empress Jessamine’s death. Users can utilize The Mark of the Outsider, which grant’s the title character supernatural powers, in addition to stealth tactics to survive.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor will include chips from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Bloomberg this week reported the Xbox 360 successor will utilize an AMD system-on-a-chip solution that combines ‘Jaguar’ CPU units with graphics chips.

By comparison, the Playstation 4 will utilize similar architecture with an AMD chipset solution and an X86-based CPU.

Microsoft this week said Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II for the Xbox 360 ranked as the top Xbox Live title in the latest activity data.

In the new data, Call of Duty: Black Ops II ranked as the No. 1 Xbox Live title based on number of unique users for the week of Apr. 1.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition ranked at No. 2 and FIFA Soccer 13 ranked at No. 3 in the same period.

Microsoft this week said Terraria – Xbox 360 Edition ranked as the top-selling Xbox Live Arcade title in the latest sales data for the division.

For the week of Apr. 1, Terraria – Xbox 360 Edition ranked as the No. 1-selling Xbox Live Arcade title based on full versions purchased.

Minecraft ranked at No. 2 and Trials Evolution ranked at No. 3 in the same period.

Retailer Amazon.com Inc. this month began offering bonus in-game content for EA Inc.’s Battlefield 4 to early bird customers.

Customers who pre-order the title prior to Apr. 13 will receive additional in-game content when the game launches this fall.

Ubisoft Inc. this week said it will release Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon May 1.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a stand-alone digital download shooter title that pays homage to action titles from the late 80’s and early 90’s. The lead character, Rex Power Colt, is a cyber-commando sent to a remote island to take Colonel Ike Sloan and his robot army.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment this week said it will release Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel in the Batman: Arkham franchise Oct. 25.

Developed by WB Games Montréal, Batman: Arkham Origins is said to include an expanded Gotham City and feature a less-experienced Batman.

The title will take place before Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City.

Motocross Madness is a nimble arcade-style racer that features fast stunt-based races, customization, and multiplayer options for a solid ride in a FINAL Review.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii U hardware fell in latest weekly Japan retail data.

Media Create Co. this month reported that the Wii U sold 14,783 units between Apr. 1 and Apr. 7 to rank at No. 4 in overall sales.

It sold 22,829 units at launch the week prior.

The hardware ranked one title in the top 10, Game & Wario at No. 10. Dragon Quest X fell out of the top 10 to rank at No. 12 to sell 43,202 units to date.

The Wii sold 1,718 units in the same period.

Ubisoft Inc. this week said it will release Splinter Cell: Blacklist to the Wii U hardware Aug. 20.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist will include enhanced gameplay features with the Wii U GamePad, from motion-based inputs to weapon swap functionality.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist will include brand new gameplay features including shooting multiple targets in seconds.

Disney Interactive this week said it will release Disney’s Planes to the Wii U, Wii, and Nintendo 3DS Aug. 6.

The flight action title is said to expand on the storyline of the film, to be released Aug. 9.

The final game will include 10 characters on console and six characters on handheld in addition to two-player drop-in, drop-out functionality.

The Nintendo 3DS held the No. 1 hardware rank in the latest Japan retail data.

Media Create Co. this month said the Nintendo 3DS sold 56,864 units between Apr. 1 and Apr. 7 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The hardware sold 66,980 the week prior.

The 3DS ranked three titles in the top 10, including Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon at No. 1, Animal Crossing: New Leaf at No. 2, and Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission at No. 6.

Nintendo this week released a software update to the Swapnote application for the Nintendo 3DS.

The new update allows users to attach photos and audio recordings to replies, take photos or record audio within the application, use a different pen color on each page, and undo last pen strokes.

In addition, the update offers faster load times, option to filter notes by users or favorites, and the option to delete multiple notes at once.

Namco Bandai Games America Inc. this week said it will release Project X Zone to the Nintendo 3DS June 25.

The title will be sold in a Limited Edition SKU with mini-art book, poster and music CD at no extra cost at $39.99.
