Sales Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 neared Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 in new Feb. U.S. retail data.

NPD Group Inc. this week said the PS3 sold 283,000 units in Feb. By comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 302,000 units in the same period.

The strong sales come amid the announcement of the Playstation 4 in Feb.

Sony in Feb. said the PS4 will utilize a PC-like architecture with an x86-based CPU, PC GPU, 8GB RAM, and large local storage. The company did not provide specifications, though previous reports claim the hardware will utilize CPU and GPU technology by AMD.

The DualShock 4 controller will include a new touch pad, share button, headphone jack, and light bar that will interact with a new camera to track the controller.

Sony in Feb. said the game division held an operating profit of $49.3 million, down 86 percent from the year prior.

It sold 6.8 Playstation 3 and Playstation 2 consoles in the quarter, down from 7.4 million one year ago. It forecasts 16 million hardware units sold in the fiscal year ending Mar.
