Capcom Co.’s Darkstalkers Resurrection for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 is a solid HD update that haunts the fighting classic with modern graphics, functionality, and unlockable extras.
Developed by Iron Galaxy Studios, Darkstalkers Resurrection is a two-game pack that includes Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. Each title adds high-definition graphics, challenges, leaderboards, online functionality and a vault to check out unlocked items.
Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge, released in 1995, features two new characters – Hsien-Ko and Donovane Baine and adds a multi-level special meter to build and execute stronger specials.
Darkstalkers 3, released in 1997, takes away four characters from prior entries to add Jedah, Lilith, Q-Bee and B. B. Hood. The title changes the two round format to one round two power bars. In addition, users can utilize the Dark Force System to dynamically change the environment and execute special moves in a limited time period.
Both titles feature tight controls that match up to the arcade counterpart, though fight pros may want to invest in a specialized fighting game pad or joystick for serious online battles.
Both titles feature a range of graphics options, from a traditional arcade cabinet bezel to stretch to HD, even an ‘Over The Shoulder’ view that distorts the view at an angle.
The graphics engine is pixel perfect with each Darkstalkers entry retaining the title’s generous, comical animation per character. The sound engine is robust and clear, with faithful battle cries that project from standard TV speakers to a home theater rig.
Darkstalkers Resurrection is a solid HD update perfect for fans of the series or any 2D fight fans. The classic titles have been fully restored with modern options and maintain the top control found in the original release.
