Sony Corp. this week recorded a third quarter profit in the company’s game division but decreased its forecast for slumping handheld sales.

This week, Sony said the game division held an operating profit of $49.3 million, down 86 percent from the year prior.

It sold 6.8 Playstation 3 and Playstation 2 consoles in the quarter, down from 7.4 million one year ago. It forecasts 16 million hardware units sold in the fiscal year.

The Playstation Vita and PSP sold 2.7 million units combined in Q3. However, the company slashed shipment forecasts for the handhelds to seven million units by the end of fiscal Mar., down from a forecast of 16 million units.

Console software sales declined to 61.7 million from 68.7 million one year prior. Handheld software sales fell to 8.9 million from 11.4 million.

The entire Sony business held a net loss of $115 million in Q3, down from a $1.7 billion loss the year prior.

Sales for the Playstation 3 ranked second in Japan in the latest retail figures for the region.

Media Create Co. this week reported the PS3 sold 18,106 units between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware 18,322 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked three titles in the top 10, including Capcom Co.’s DmC: Devil May Cry at No. 3, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale at No. 5, and Accel World at No. 7.

The Playstation 4 console may exceed $400 at retail according to a new report.

The Asashi Shimbun this week said the price for the PS4 has not been set, but is expected to exceed 40,000 yen, or $429 U.S.

The publication did not specify pricing for any particular market, though game consoles typically sell at a higher price in Japan than in the U.S.

It expects the next Playstation to be sold by Christmas.

Konami Corp. this week said Metal Gear Rising: Revengenace for the Playstation 3 will include exclusive VR Missions.

The PS3 exclusive DLC VR Missions will add 30 all-new missions to the game that feature combat training, tactical maneuvering, stealth-based approaches, and the ability to control Dwarf Gekko.

Developed by Platinum Games, Metal Gear Rising, to be sold Feb. 19, will feature Raiden in spectacular battles between soldiers and machines.

Sony this week released Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time to the Playstation 3 and the Playstation Vita.

The title includes an all-new adventure that features time travel and trademark action / adventure platform gameplay.

The PS3 and PS Vita SKUs include Cross-Play functionality to allow Cross-Saves. The PS Vita SKU includes new touch controls and augmented reality.

In addition, a downloadable companion DLC called Bentley’s Hackpack, which includes arcade mini-games with 20 levels and 100 challenges.

Sony this week said The Unfinished Swan led game sales for the Playstation Network division in Jan. 2013 U.S. data.

The Unfinished Swan ranked as the No. 1 PSN and PS3 Full Games in Jan. The top five titles included LittleBigPlanet Karting at No. 2, Earthworm Jim HD at No. 3, Journey at No. 4 and Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy at No. 5.

Top PS3 Add-Ons included the NBA 2K13 10,000 VC Pack and the Call of Duty: Black Ops II Season Pass.

Sales for the Playstation Vita held steady in the latest retail data from Japan.

The PS Vita sold 9,596 units between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3 to rank as the No. 5 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the hardware sold 9,748 the week prior.

The hardware ranked one title in the top 10 for the week, Demon Gaze at No. 8.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 12,191 units to rank at No. 4 in the same period.

Sony this week released Playstation Home Arcade application for the Playstation Vita handheld.

The new portal offers the option to play arcade classics like Centipede, Asteroids, Frogger, and more recent titles like Icebreaker and Scribble Shooter.

Users can download arcade titles within the application at $1.49 each.

As a launch promotion, Icebreaker, Wipeout 2D and a demo of Scribble Shooter are available at no cost.

Sony this week said Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable ranked as the top-selling Playstation Vita title at the Playstation Network in Jan. 2013.

Earth Defense Force 2017 ranked No. 1 in sales for the month, followed by Persona 4 Golden at No. 2, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD at No. 3, Plants vs. Zombies at No. 4 and Sound Shapes at No. 5.

Top PSP titles for the month include UNO PSP at No. 1, Corpse Party: Book of Shadows at No. 2, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories at No. 3.

Sony this week released new details for Killzone: Mercenary to the Playstation Vita.

Killzone: Mercenary Game Director Piers Jackson of Guerilla Cambridge told the Playstation Blog this week that the company tried to get the full console experience to the PS Vita handheld and that graphics from the title would be similar to Killzone 3.

Also, each of the title’s nine missions will be between 40 minutes to 1 hour in length and include large set pieces.

Killzone: Mercenary, to be sold Sept. 17, will include shooting and close-combat first-person action in nine single-player paid-job scenarios.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware held a small gain in new sales data from Japan.

Media Create Co. this week reported that the Xbox 360 sold 870 units between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3 to rank No. 7 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 611 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any software in the top 10 game sales.

The Xbox 360 successor will include a Blu-ray disc drive and lack the ability to play used games according to a new report.

EDGE Magazine this week claims the next Xbox will utilize 50GB capacity Blu-ray discs for games. Games will reportedly require activation codes to prevent second-hand usage.

In addition, the console is said to require an ‘always on’ internet connection in order to function.

Microsoft this week said Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II for the Xbox 360 ranked as the top Xbox Live title in the latest activity data.

In the new data, Call of Duty: Black Ops II ranked as the No. 1 Xbox Live title based on number of unique users for the week of Jan. 28.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition ranked at No. 2 and FIFA Soccer 13 ranked at No. 3 in the same period.

Microsoft this week said Minecraft ranked as the top-selling Xbox Live Arcade title in the latest sales data for the division.

For the week of Jan. 28, Minecraft ranked as the No. 1-selling Xbox Live Arcade title based on full versions purchased.

EA Inc. this week released Dead Space 3 to U.S. retail.

Dead Space 3 includes drop-in, drop-out co-op functionality for up to two players and battles against numerous large boss enemies.

Ubisoft Inc. this week said it will release The Tyranny of King Washington DLC for Assassin’s Creed III Feb. 19.

The first single-player episodic DLC features Ratonhnhaké:ton in a quest to obliterate King Washington.

New abilities include Power of the Bear, Power of the Eagle, Power of the Wolf, Warpaint, and Alpha of the Pack.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii U hardware fell in new Japan retail data.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii U sold 12,959 units between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3 to rank No. 3 in overall sales.

It sold 13,746 units at launch the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 for the week.

The Wii sold 1,904 units in the same period.

Nintendo this week said it will sell the Wii U ZombiU Deluxe Set Bundle at U.S. retail Feb. 17.

The new bundle will include the Wii U Deluxe Set, a copy of ZombiU, black Wii U Pro Controller, and Nintendo Land download code at $389.99.

The bundle is said to represent a $70 savings when purchased separately.

In addition, Wii U ZombiU Deluxe Set buyers will be enrolled in the Digital Deluxe Promotion that allows Wii U owners to receive 10 percent back in points for each download they purchase in the Nintendo eShop.

Sales for the Nintendo 3DS held as the top hardware Japan in weekly retail data from the region.

Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 77,682 units between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The hardware sold 75,124 the week prior.

The 3DS ranked four titles in the top 10 including Animal Crossing: New Leaf at No. 1, New Super Mario Bros. 2 at No. 4, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate at No. 6.

Fire Emblem Awakening for the Nintendo 3DS held a sold out status at leading retailers post launch of the title due to strong demand.

This week, Fire Emblem Awakening was sold out at GameStop Corp.’s online division, Best Buy Co. Inc.’s online division, and at It was released to U.S. retail Feb. 5.

Fire Emblem Awakening is a strategy title with full character customization, downloadable content for new maps, characters, classes, and weapons, local co-op mode and 3D graphics. Inc. this week announced Amazon Coins, a new virtual currency that will allow customers to purchase apps, games and in-app items via the Kindle Fire.

The currency, to launch this May, will allow users to purchase Amazon Coins using their Amazon accounts. In addition, it will give customers tens of millions of dollars worth of Amazon Coins to launch the initiative.

Developers will earn a standard 70 percent revenue share from apps, games, and items purchased with Amazon Coins.
