Sony Corp.’s Playstation 4 console may exceed $400 at retail according to a new report.

The Asashi Shimbun this week said the price for the PS4 has not been set, but is expected to exceed 40,000 yen, or $429 U.S.

The publication did not specify pricing for any particular market, though game consoles typically sell at a higher price in Japan than in the U.S.

It expects the next Playstation to be sold by Christmas

The Playstation 3 utilized a propriety Cell processor and 256MB of system RAM which created a difficult development environment. In addition, the components ballooned the cost of the hardware to as high as $600 at launch in 2006, a factor that limited sales potential and incurred substantial losses for the company’s game division during the period.

EDGE Magazine this month claimed the PS4, code-named Orbis, will include 4GB of GDDR5 RAM that can move data at 176 gigabytes per second, an 8-core AMD CPU at 1.6Ghz, and an AMD R10XX GPU.

In addition, the development hardware is said to be simple to work with.

Sony is expected to announced the next Playstation at the Playstation Meeting in New York Feb. 20.
