Microsoft Corp. this week recorded slower Xbox 360 sales in the second quarter pending release of the next Xbox hardware.

The company said it shipped 5.9 million Xbox 360 consoles in the second fiscal quarter, a decline from 8.2 million units the year prior.

The Entertainment and Devices division, which include the Xbox business, recorded revenue of $3.8 billion, a 11 percent decline from one year ago.

Operating income increased 15 percent to $596 million.

Microsoft in Dec. said Xbox 360 sold 1.4 million units to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the month in figures provided by NPD Group Inc.

The sales figure marked the 24th consecutive month the hardware has ranked as the No. 1 video game hardware in the U.S.
