Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 held strong through the new year in Japan in the latest retail figures.
Media Create Co. this week reported the PS3 sold 64,352 units between Dec. 31 and Jan. 6 to rank No. 3 in overall hardware sales.
By comparison, the hardware 53,222 units the week prior.
The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 for the week.
International Data Corporation this week said lifetime sales of the Playstation 3 have passed Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360 in global markets.
The firm says since Dec. 2012, the PS3 has sold 77 million units worldwide compared to the Xbox 360 at 76 million units.
The PS3 launched in late 2006 while the Xbox 360 began sale in 2005.
Sony this week released the new trailer for MLB 13 The Show for the Playstation 3 and the PS Vita.
The trailer features in-game footage and customization options to be included in the final game.
MLB 13 The Show, to be sold Mar. 5, is the latest entry in the No. 1-selling MLB video game franchise.
Sony this week said Journey ranked as the No. 1 best-selling title in the Playstation Network division in Dec. U.S. data.
Mass Effect 3 ranked at No. 2 and Far Cry 3 ranked at No. 3 in the same period.
Top PS3 Add-Ons include the Call of Duty: Black Ops II Season Pass, Need for Speed Most Wanted Ultimate Speed Pack, and Assassin’s Creed III The Hidden Secrets Pack.
Atlus Inc. this week released Demon’s Souls to the Playstation Network.
The survival action title launched with servers set to Pure White Tendency, in which enemies will have decreased HP, attack power, and defense, while players will inflict more attack damage.
In addition, enemies drop fewer upgrade stones and more healing items.
Sales for the Playstation Vita climbed in latest holiday retail data from Japan.
The PS Vita sold 33,309 units between Dec. 31 and Jan. 6 to rank as the No. 5 hardware for the week.
By comparison, the hardware sold 20,492 the week prior.
The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10.
Meanwhile, the PSP sold 54,873 units to rank at No. 4 in the same period.
Oddworld: Stranger’s World HD ranked at No. 2, Assassin’s Creed III Liberation No. 3, Persona 4 Golden ranked at No. 4 and Uncharted: Fight for Fortune at No. 5 in the same period.
Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware remained cold in New Year sales data from Japan.
Media Create Co. this week reported that the Xbox 360 sold 1,893 units between Dec. 31 and Jan. 6 to rank No. 7 in overall sales.
By comparison, the hardware sold 1,986 units the week prior.
The hardware did not rank any software in the top 10 game sales.
Microsoft this week said the Xbox 360 ranked as the top-selling game hardware in U.S. Dec. sales figures.
The Xbox 360 sold 1.4 million units to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the month in figures provided by NPD Group Inc.
The sales figure marks the 24th consecutive month the hardware has ranked as the No. 1 video game hardware in the U.S.
Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii U hardware held strong in New Year sales in Japan.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii U sold 67,083 units between Dec. 31 and Jan. 6 to rank No. 2 in overall sales.
It sold 69,386 units at launch the week prior.
The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, New Super Mario Bros. U at No. 5 and Nintendo Land at No. 7.
The Wii sold 13,049 units in the same period.
Nintendo this week said the Wii U console has generated more than $300 million at U.S. retail since launch.
The figure is $30 million more than sales for the Wii hardware in the same point in its lifecycle.
NPD Group Inc. said the Wii U sold 460,000 units in Dec. To date the console has sold 890,000 units in the U.S. after 41 days on the market.
New Super Mario Bros. U has sold 580,000 units to date with an attach rate of 65 percent.
Also in Dec., the Wii hardware sold nearly 475,000 units to total 40.8 million units in the U.S to date.
Nintendo this week said the demo for Ubisoft Inc.’s ZombiU for Nintendo Co.’s Wii U is now available at the Nintendo eShop.
The title was released as a launch title for the Wii U this past Nov.
Sales for the Nintendo 3DS held as the top hardware Japan in retail data from the region during the New Year shopping period.
Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 279,259 units between Dec. 31 and Jan. 6 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.
The hardware sold 250,205 the week prior.
Sony this week demonstrated Gran Turismo 5 for the Playstation 3 on an Ultra HD 4K HDTV at the International CES in Las Vegas, NV.
The demonstration included a copy of Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3 upscaled to run on an 84-inch Ultra HD 4K HDTV with SimulView technology.
SimulView technology allows two users to play simultaneously on the same screen by using passive glasses to differ one separate view to each user.
Sony this week announced the Xperia Z smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV.
The Xperia Z smartphone features a 5-inch Full HD 1080p 443 dpi display, Snapdragon S4 quad-core 1.5Ghz CPU, 13MP camera, HDR video, NFC technology, 4G LTE functionality, and the Android 4.1 OS.
Nvidia Corp. this week announced the Project Shield Mobile Gaming Device at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV.
Project Shield, to be sold in Q2, will feature a Tegra 4 CPU, 5-inch 720p Retinal Touch Screen Display, micro SD expansion slot, and plain Android with support for games in Tegra Zone and all Google Play apps.
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. this week announced the Ascend Mate smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV.
The Ascend Mate includes a large 6.1-inch 1280 x 720 resolution screen, quad-core 1.5Ghz CPU, 13MP camera, 4050mAH battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The product trumps Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s Galaxy Note II as the largest screen smartphone to date. The Note II includes a 5.55-inch Super AMOLED screen at 720p resolution.
The Ascend Mate will ship in China in Jan. and other markets in Mar.
Lenovo this week demonstrated the 27-inch IdeaCentre Horizon Table at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV.
The device can lie flat on any surface and supports gaming for two or more players. The company demonstrated several titles, including a multiplayer action title and a two-player Air Hockey game that utilized physical accessories to simulate two hockey mallets.
The table was responsive to quick actions and runs Windows 8 with an Intel Core i7 CPU and Nvidia GPU.
The final product will be sold with e-dice, four joysticks, and strikers.
Qualcomm Inc. this week announced the new Snapdragon 600 and 800 series mobile processors at the International CES in Las Vegas, NV.
The Snapdragon 600 series includes a quad-core Krait 300 CPU at up to 1.9Ghz, Adreno 320 GPU, LPDDR3 RAM, and up to 40 percent better performance than the Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.
600 series processors will be sold in Q2 2013.
The Snapdragon 800 series include the quad-core Krait 400 CPU at up to 2.3Ghz, Adreno 333 GPU with 2X the compute performance of the Adreno 320, 2x32bit LPDDR3 RAM at 800MHz, 4G LTE functionality, Ultra HD functionality at 4096 x 2304 resolution, HD Audio, dual image processors at 55MP and 1080p video at 30 frames per second, and 75 percent better performance than the Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.
800 series will be sold in smartphones, tablets, in addition to Smart TVs and other consumer electronics devices.
800 series processors will be sold in mid-2013.
