International Data Corporation this week said lifetime sales of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 have passed Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360 in global markets.

The firm says since Dec. 2012, the PS3 has sold 77 million units worldwide compared to the Xbox 360 at 76 million units.

The PS3 launched in late 2006 while the Xbox 360 began sale in 2005.

Sony in 2012 released a new cost-reduced version of the PS3 which removed the slot-load disc drive. Microsoft introduced a slim Xbox 360 in 2010.

Lastly, IDC it expects Nintendo Co.’s Wii U to sell 50 million units by 2016.
