Sony Corp. and Netflix Inc. this week said the Playstation 3 is the top platform for viewing movies and TV shows from Netflix.
“PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall,” said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings.
“PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3.”
Netflix currently serves 30 million customers globally with streaming movie and TV services.
The company expanded Netflix functionality to the Playstation Vita this year, with the ability to swap viewing between the PS3 and the handheld dynamically.
In the second quarter, the Playstation 3 and Playstation 2 sold 3.5 million units combined, a decline from 4.9 million one year prior.
PS3 and PS2 software sales increased in the quarter to 41.4 million from 40.2 million units one year prior.
Sony’s game business division held $1.9 billion in revenue, down from $2.2 billion and $28.8 million in operating income, down from $37.5 million year-over-year.
