Capcom Co.’s One Piece: Pirate Warriors for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 is a standard action title that includes beat-em-up action against a mob of pirates.
Developed by Tecmo Koei and Omega Force, One Piece: Pirate Warriors features the cast of the classic manga series in combat in solo or co-op sessions. The title includes three modes: Main Log (Story Mode), Adventure Mode (Story Mode with alternate characters), and Challenge Log, a survival mode to beat down enemies and bosses.
Gameplay is similar to Dynasty Warriors titles with lead character Luffy able to stretch in a multitude of comical directions to take down waves of enemies. The character is entirely nimble to allow the user to bend, stretch, and inflate to pummel other pirates.
The title includes some platform elements to break up the non-stop action, though most involve simple button presses to launch the character from one area to another.
In addition, users can collect character coins throughout the game that can be used to power up the character.
Co-op mode is solid. Users can choose between Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji to buddy up locally or online.
The graphics engine is decent with cel-shaded characters animated in likeness to their manga counterparts. Cutscenes and CG sequences help to move the narrative and provide solid fan service.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors is a standard download title that includes plenty of action, though non-franchise fans may want stretch to the Dynasty Warriors titles for added depth.
