Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware spiked in Japan amid the release of a new Dragon Quest title in the region.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 16,145 units between Aug. 6 and Aug. 12 to rank No. 2 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 41,415 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked four titles in the top 10, including Square Enix Holdings Co.’s Dragon Quest X: Mezameshi Itsutsu no Shuzoku Online at No. 2 which sold 73,705 units to rank in week two. The title has sold 440,853 units to date.

Nintendo in July recorded a $220 million loss in the first quarter due to declining sales of the Wii console.

In the quarter ending June 30, held a net loss of $220 million on revenue of $1.08 billion.

Nintendo sold 710,000 Wii units between Apr. and June, less than half of the 1.6 million units sold in the same period last year.

The Wii holds a global install base of 51 million units.

Nintendo will release Wii U, the successor the Wii hardware, in 2012.
